Boneless vs Frame Wiper Blades – What’s The Difference?

What is the difference between beam vs conventional wiper blades? This is the most popular question our customer service agents receive. First, we will walk you through the differences of each wiper blade style, then help you find which blade is best for you.

Traditional Metal Wiper Blade Style

Metal wiper blades are also known as traditional frame blades. Frame wiper blades are found on most vehicles in operation today. They are readily available, widely used, and very affordable.

Conventional wiper blades have:

  • a frame that mounts to the wiper
  • a rubber surface that connects to the blade
  • multiple pressure points across the length of the blade

While these blades have a “tried and true” design, they often struggle to make it through tough winters. As a result, snow and ice can often build up and deteriorate the metal frame. This is where traditional technology finds its limit.

FLAT BEAM WIPER Blade Style

Wiper blade manufacturers designed a new style, the flat wiper blade, to improve performance over the conventional design. These blades do not have the metal framework of traditional wipers, so they have fewer moving pieces. As a result, these blades usually last longer than conventional blades.

Beam wiper blades have:

  • both graphite and double-rubber bands for longer-lasting performance
  • an infinite number of pressure points along the blade
  • superior performance in all weather conditions
  • better overall durability
  • a sleek design

Some drivers choose these premium beam blades for their sleek appearance. While others prefer beam wiper blades because more contact points with the windshield mean less gaps, streaks and noise.

While beam wiper blades yield higher performance and durability ratings, they also tend to result in a higher price tag.

Hybrid Wiper Blade Style

A third option, the hybrid wiper blade, was designed as a blend of both the conventional and beam styles. These blades do a great job at combatting heavy winds, ice and snow, although their bulky style does not always match the sleek design of modern cars.

Hybrid wiper blades have:

  • a traditional metal frame similar to conventional blades
  • a protective rubber shell that covers the conventional blade
  • multiple pressure points with a durable cover

Not all vehicles are equipped with the connectors to support the hybrid blades. But, many brands are now designing hybrid blades to fit more vehicle options.

Flat vs Metal Wiper Blades – Which Is Better?

Both styles will provide you clear visibility in the short term, but it’s important to also consider installation and durability in your evaluation.

For the easiest installation, we recommend matching the style of the wiper blade that originally came with your car. That’s why many aftermarket brands, such as ANCO, TRICO, Bosch and Valeo, design their wiper blades to match the car’s original specifications.

Lastly, be sure to consider the lifespan you want for your blades. If you frequently drive through heavy snowstorms, a few extra dollars may provide you an extra six months of wiper blade life.
